Each July, three amazing women are selected to represent the City of Minneapolis as goodwill ambassadors of the City of Lakes.
The Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes and two Princesses dedicate one year of their lives to travel throughout the State of Minnesota and across the United States spreading warm summer greetings from America's greatest summer celebration.
About the Program
The Queen of the Lakes Scholarship Program is a week-long candidate program for women ages 18-22 that is held in Minneapolis in conjunction with the City of Minneapolis' annual festival: the Aquatennial.
The Aquatennial is typically held the third week in July. Each year approximately 50 candidates, who are ambassadors from their Minnesota communities or festivals, participate in a rigorous judging process to become the Queen of the Lakes or one of the two Aquatennial Princesses.
Candidates are judged on a variety of criteria including their poise, professionalism, public speaking ability, current and future goals, education and co-curricular/extra curricular activities.
As ambassadors, the Queen of the Lakes and Princesses travel throughout the state and region representing the City of Minneapolis. The Queen of the Lakes has historically visited other festivals throughout the U.S. and the world and is known as one of the most traveled community ambassadors in the United States. At the end of their year of service as an ambassador of the festival, the Queen and Princesses receive educational scholarships from the Aquatennial Ambassador Foundation.
